Jonathan Ouisse

October 08th, 2020

8/10/2020

a-space is very happy to show some selected works from you in the online room „off track“. Could you tell the readers what is your artworks about?
As a figurative painter, I portray the universe in a disturbing light. Protagonists and animals gravitate in a world where they are mistreated. Often grotesque, exhibiting mockery and derision, it is full of symbols inspired by political matters, the media and childhood without ever becoming a mere cliché. Influenced by the pictorial gesture of the Italian Renaissance, the claroscuro, the style is precise and the lighting is dramatic. Firmly rooted in the nineties my work is influenced by urban culture, particularly Hip-hop movement and the traits associated with this culture will undoubtedly make an impression on those who see it. Usually painting with acrylic on canvas, as it dries faster, trying to achieve an oil painting finish.

How does the situation in 2020 influence you as an artist?
Well, paradoxically the current situation helped me ! I was able to focus more on my work and despite the cancellation of exhibitions, new opportunities have been knocking at my door. As the direct effects of lockdown, galleries and collectors spent much more time on internet and I had the chances to get some commisioned paintings on the way as well as signing collaboration contract with new galleries.

Did the current circumstances influence your theme in your artworks?
Not at all, I'm not that kind of artist who will jump on anything to get attention. I think that representing visually the global situation, masks, "love in time of cholera" (Garcia Marquez) style, doesn't need to be immortalised,it is just serving the Artist ego for a moment. But it is true that the circumstances are really interesting sociologically and politically speaking. For years now, those themes are recurrent in my work as explained previously.

How do you see the future in art and the whole market in general. Do you think the online presence will become more important or is this just a temporary issue…?
I think the online presence will be more and more important in the future, but I think it will only serve as a plus for the real exhibition. Collectors and people in general like to see, feel and sometimes touch, the Artworks. For my point of view googling and virtually going through a museum is nice and frustrating at the same time. Like everything in life, real is the best !

If new collectors would be interested in your work but have difficulties to travel to meet you, would you be up for a ZOOM atelier meeting?
I would definitely be interested in a zoom meeting.

What else can we expect from you in the future? Do you have any plans yet for another exhibition?
Some Art fairs in France, Art-Montpellier in October and ST'ART Strasbourg in November are being maintained. A solo show with Galerie Audet in Colmar in March 2021 and another solo with Maze Gallery in London in May. Hopefully the situation will have evolved in a positive way !

Thank you Jonathan for the interview and hopefully see you soon!
